Product Description

Directed by: John Huston

This film, the first of John Huston's three World War II documentaries, was filmed on the remote Aleutian island called Adak.

After a surprise Japanese attack on Alaska at Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands chain, American ingenuity comes to the fore of World War II.

The Americans need an airfield and select Adak - tiny and uninhabited, but "one of the most important strategic locations in the world" - to be the site for this new airfield.

Within ten days after arriving at Adak, the Americans drain and fill a tidal lagoon and then take a mere 36 hours to install an unusual prefabricated steel runway so that bombing missions can begin right away.

John Huston and his cameras are right there through it all to show just how devastating to the enemy can be American ingenuity and courage.
