Avery "Kid" Howard and His New Orleans Jazz Band play Great Spirituals at Zion Hill Church
For too many people, the term “jazz man” represents a shoddy, seamy character; however, Avery “Kid” Howard was anything but that. This recording is of Kid Howard and his band playing at the Zion Hill Church where Howard regularly attended services. When someone questioned the propriety of having a jazz band play in a church, the Rev. Alexander Griffin smiled and said, “God gave those fine musicians their talent. Why shouldn’t they display it in God’s House?”
That set the mood for the session.
This is a collection of well-known spirituals and hymns, familiar to countless generations of New Orleanians, but it also gives a more complete picture of the New Orleans Jazzman.
